Summary Statement

The state of Georgia supports programs for frail and elderly citizens through federal funds and the appropriation of state funds.

Basic Considerations

The Division of Aging Services (DAS), as the designated State Unit on Aging, receives funding from the federal Administration on Aging, a unit of the Administration for Community Living, to operate programs authorized under the Older American’s Act (OAA).

Federal Funds

Funding from the federal government pays for all or portions of specific programs. Often, federal funds require a state fund "match" to receive the federal money.

State Funds

The appropriation of state funds is to meet the required match for Federal programs and provide services above the level supported by Federal funds.

Proceeds from the Income Tax Check-off for Children and Elderly also provide state funds for Aging programs. Georgians check the appropriate box on the State of Georgia Income Tax Form. Proceeds from the fund are used statewide and are divided equally between services for the elderly and services for children. Funds for the elderly may only be used to provide home-delivered meals and transportation.

Local Funds

Local funds may be required as matching funds for Federal monies. The percent of the local fund match varies by fund source.

Area Agencies on Aging may fund programs, services or clients using 100% local funds.

Other Funds

Funds from other sources including but not limited to private grants, contracts, or donations may be received by the State or Area Agencies on Aging and must be utilized according to grant/donor designation.
