Summary Statement

The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS), Division of Aging Services (DAS) will offer leadership development programs to leadership staff to promote the development of an understanding workforce. Proper leadership development results in a well-equipped staff in any organization.

Background and Scope

The objective is to educate employees about the policies and procedures of this division. Curriculums may be delivered in the form of virtual independent lessons, videos, practical exercises, policy review, and instructor led courses to be completed within a designated time frame.

Definitions

Sexual Harassment Prevention Training - The Sexual Harassment Prevention Training for supervisors and managers is an online training course available through Team Georgia Learning, the Department of Administration System (DOAS) Learning Management System (LMS). Supervisors and managers will receive an automatic registration email from Team Georgia Learning.

DHS Skills for Successful Supervision – This course provides essential information regarding the Georgia Department of Human Services policies and procedures and your role as a supervisor. Supervisors play a critical role in ensuring the success of your offices by establishing engaged, motivated, and high performing teams. Your effective leadership ensures that your office operates strategically, adheres to compliance standards and assists in developing “Stronger families for a stronger Georgia.” This training will assist you with developing and enhancing various skills that will lead to your success as a supervisor.

Crucial Conversations - Crucial Conversations is a two-week mandatory training course that takes a hybrid approach to improve your customer service and communication skills. The Crucial Conversations training helps managers have effective communication that fosters inclusion, trust, and mutual respect for building a healthy and high-performing culture in the workplace.

Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Academy - The Department of Human Services Supervisor Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Academy provides the opportunity to develop leadership and management skills necessary to become an emerging leader within this organization.

DHS Leadership Academy - The DHS Leadership Academy is targeted at developing high potential mid to upper-level management employees from all divisions and offices across the Department. Employees who are nominated and selected to participate must complete a rigorous six-month program that covers topics such as unleashing your inner leader, innovation, and collaboration, and transforming the future.

Supervisor Reasonable Suspicion - Reasonable Suspicion Training, hosted by our third-party drug testing vendor Vault Workforce Screening, is designed for supervisors or other department officials authorized to make reasonable suspicion determinations. It includes 60 minutes of training on signs and symptoms of probable drug use and 60 minutes on probable alcohol misuse. Training includes physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate indicating they have satisfied the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) reasonable suspicion training requirements for DHS supervisors.

Training and Development Staff – Training and Development Specialists and specialty positions that conduct On-the-Job, Mandatory, and Specialized training. Trainers are responsible for the development, documentation, and delivery of department training.

Learning Management System (LMS)- A designated training platform used to register for virtual independent lessons, videos, practical exercises, policy review and instructor led courses.

Procedures

Upon employment or promotion with DAS, the hiring manager and new employee will complete a Supervisor Checklist. When a worker is hired or promoted into a supervisor position, there additional procedures for the supervisor to manage effectively.

  1. Follow the instructions on the Supervisor Checklist.

    1. Complete the notification procedures and documents.

    2. Complete the online training series.

    3. Complete the Mandatory Instructor Led Training.

  2. Sexual Harassment Prevention Training

    1. All supervisors must complete the DOAS Sexual Harassment Prevention Training within 30 days of hire or promotion and annually thereafter.

  3. DHS Skills for Successful Supervision

    1. Enroll the supervisors into the next available DHS SSS course via LMS.

    2. This is a prerequisite course to attend LEAD Academy and DHS Leadership Academy

  4. Crucial Conversations (12 Hours)

    1. Enroll the supervisor into the next available Crucial Conversation course as available.

  5. Leadership, Education and Development (LEAD) Academy (80 Hours)

    1. Nomination by direct manager.

  6. DHS Leadership Academy (65 Hours)

  1. Nomination by direct manager.

  1. Supervisor Reasonable Suspicion (1 Hour)

Enroll the supervisor into the next available course.

  1. There may be developments of additional management training within various sections of DAS as determined by leadership and/or Training and Development Staff.
