9003 Community Education/Training

Summary Statement

The Forensic Special Initiatives Unit (FSIU) will provide education and training on topics relevant to at-risk adult abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Basic Considerations

Education and Training Requests

Education and training requests can be made via phone or email to any member of FSIU.

Determining Availability

Priority will be given to education and training opportunities that reach larger geographic regions (i.e., state conferences). Priority will also be given to audiences that include primary and secondary responders to crimes against at-risk adults. If FSIU is not available to provide training, all efforts will be made to locate other resources for training. While most education and training are done via request by the sponsoring agency, the FSIU may contact an agency to determine if training can be provided.

Topics

FSIU provides community education and training on topics related to crimes against at-risk adults including, but not limited to:

  • Georgia law pertaining to crimes against at-risk adults

  • The main types and indicators of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of at-risk adults

  • Financial crimes targeting at-risk adults

  • Crimes in facilities

  • Undue influence

  • Power of Attorney, Guardianship, Conservatorship

  • Investigations of crimes against at-risk adults

  • Prosecution of crimes against at-risk adults

  • Suspicious Deaths

  • Benefits Trafficking

  • Multi-disciplinary approaches to crimes against at-risk adults

FSIU may invite other Division of Aging Services sections to collaborate on education and training requests.

Requests for education on how Adult Protective Services (APS) conducts investigations will be referred to the APS Section Manager.

Data Collection

Data on the number, type of audience, and topics discussed results will be entered into the DAS Data System.

Procedures

FSIU will respond to education and training requests within one week. All efforts will be made to accommodate the request and schedule the education and training as soon as possible.
