Insurance for Volunteers

“Volunteer” means any person who participates without compensation in a volunteer program organized, controlled, and/or directed by a DHS state entity.

Volunteers Are Prohibited from Driving State-Owned or State-Leased Vehicles.

Individuals who use their personal vehicles for transporting and participate in an unpaid volunteer program that is organized, controlled, and directed by a State entity, is insured by Liability coverages. Volunteers who meet criteria, are not insured by Comprehensive coverages. The Liability Insurance does not cover the volunteer’s personal vehicle and will only apply while the volunteer is performing official State duties. If a volunteer is transporting individuals, the State organization is responsible for securing a valid driver’s license specific to the volunteer’s class of vehicle and proof of automobile insurance coverages. A photocopy of the volunteer’s driver’s license and insurance card must be maintained in the organization’s volunteer files.
